The Writing Desk is a graphic novel based on actual events, centred on the lives of two young sisters who grew up in South Canterbury in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The sisters' paths diverge, as Elsie defies convention to seek a medical career, while Margaret dutifully remains on the family farm—until tragedy reunites them. Combining comics with photographs, letters, and other historical ephemera, The Writing Desk explores the challenging realities of everyday life for New Zealand women in the Victorian era and beyond.
